“In this study, the anti-aging effects of Rice Kefiran were investigated especially in terms of physiological functionality and life expectancy with nematodes, Caenorhabditis elegans. C. elegans is widely used as a model organism in research on aging because of its transparent body and ease of culturing.
Nematodes were cultured on each plate at various concentrations of dextrin-mixed Rice Kefiran, dextrin, and pure Rice Kefiran. Then their respective lifespans and age-related motility were assessed. Survival rates and motility levels after heat application, which is generally known to reduce nematode motility, were also evaluated.
As a result, adding pure Rice Kefiran to culture medium significantly extended the lifespan of nematodes (Figure 1) and significantly suppressed the age-associated decline in motility (Figure 2). Furthermore, the motility levels in pure Rice Kefiran group significantly recovered 12 hours after heat stress.
This study demonstrated that Rice Kefiran exerts anti-aging effects by extending lifespan and suppressing age-related decline in motility, and also improves heat stress tolerance in C. elegans.”
