Daiwa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Daiwa, head office in Setagaya, Tokyo; president, Mr. Y. Ninomiya) has announced that it has established a local corporation "DHD (EUROPE) Ltd.," as a joint-venture company with Japan Flexel Ltd. (head office in Shibuya, Tokyo; president, Mr. T. Uchiyamada) in Cambridge, UK, in early September.

The new joint-venture company will provide "Bio Bran", in which the major ingredients are rice bran arabinoxylan and "NKCP", the main products of Daiwa, to the European market from its business base in the UK. Daiwa has been achieving good sales performances of these products through exports to America, and that has led to a rapid increase in enquiries from Europe. The local corporation has been established in order to respond to such enquiries. The sales target at the initial stage is one ton per month, on a raw material basis.

The reason for sitting the business base in Cambridge is to obtain up to date information in the biosciences, since there has been an R & D facility of an educational-industrial complex, including establishment of a major science park, there. Proposals for joint studies with several research institutions, including Cambridge University, have already been discussed. There is considerable expectation on the future developments and results coming out of such arrangements.

Several enquiries for distribution agency have been received from European countries such as Italy and Portugal, as well as the UK. Negotiations for deals are already in progress.
