The 21st meeting of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Society for WAKAN-YAKUwas held at Toyama Shimin Plaza

The 21st meeting of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Society for WAKAN-YAKU was held at Toyama Shimin Plaza of Toyama International Conference Center on August 21 (Sat) and 22 (Sun). Daiwa Pharmaceutical spoke on new study results about the effects of gHydrolyzed Rice Bran (HRB)h and gPurified Natto Culture Filtrateh and made a poster presentation on gHydrolyzed Rice Bran.h

This meeting had the main theme gToward establishment of holistic medicine utilizing natural providence and blessings.h This society, an academic association that mainly studies the effects of Japanese and Chinese medicines, has been looking into natural food functions in recent years. The speeches by Daiwa Pharmaceutical at the meeting are outlined below.

gThe preventative effect of Hydrolyzed Rice Bran against common cold syndrome in the elderlyh

We already reported last year that HRB relieved common cold symptoms in a placebo-controlled double-blind cross-over comparative study in elderly people to examine the clinical usefulness of HRB based on the immunorestoration. In the present study, we evaluated the detailed relationship between changes in common cold symptoms and immunological laboratory parameters such as NK cell activity and obtained new findings on the relationship between immunocompetence and common cold symptoms and the effect of HRB.

Analysis of the results obtained from 36 elderly people suggested that the immunological parameters such as NK cell activity are predictive factors for development of common cold syndrome and the clinical necessity of HRB in the elderly.

gEffect of Purified Natto Culture Filtrate on the coagulation and fibrinolysis systemh

NKCP, developed by Daiwa Pharmaceutical, is a purified natto culture filtrate of which the main component is 34 KDa bacillopeptidase F. This main component is an enzyme with plasmin-like activity secreted by Bacillus subtilis natto outside the cell, which is different from Subtilisn (alkaline) protease, known as nattokinase.

At the meeting, we reported the effects of NKCP on the coagulation and fibrinolysis system: NKCP lysed clots and inhibited coagulation in a study using human blood; delayed coagulation in a dose-dependent manner in a rat model of thrombus formation; and did not enhance coagulation delay by warfarin in a rat coagulation delay model.

These results showed that NKCP has a significant coagulation-delaying effect besides the fibrinolytic effect that has long been known in nattokinase, suggesting that it may prevent thrombosis by inhibiting thrombus formation.

Daiwa Pharmaceutical made a poster presentation in addition to the above two speeches. The outline is shown below.
