Daiwa introduced 3 functional food ingredients at HFE JAPAN 2006

The gHFE JAPAN 2006 (4th Health Food Exposition & Conference, organized by Food Chemicals Newspaper Inc., sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and others)h was held at Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo, Japan), from May 30th to June 1st. Daiwa made a presentation on the characteristics and functions of 3 functional food ingredients produced through our unique research and development.

In this event, held jointly with the gifia JAPAN 2006 (11th International Food Ingredients & Additives Exhibition and Conference),h participants from over 400 companies from 18 countries, as well as over 30,000 visitors gathered as usual. The participants are becoming more conscious of this yearly event.

Seminars and company presentations offered the latest research results. Daiwa made a presentation entitled gThe usefulness of functional food ingredients,h explaining the characteristics and functions of BioBran (rice bran Arabinoxylan derivative), NKCP (purified filtrate of Bacillus subtilis natto culture), and Rice Kefiran (phytogalactoglucan from LK-Lactobacillus culture with rice medium).

BioBran has been on the market over 10 years (now sold in 38 countries) since it was developed and commercialized. The presentation was made mainly on its biological defense actions such as scavenging active oxygen, decreasing inflammation, alleviating side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, liver protection against chemicals, and infection prevention.

We spoke about NKCP's triple functions-actions of lysing blood clots, preventing thrombus formation, and decreasing the viscosity of blood, showing experiments on lysing blood clots using artificial thrombi.

We received a subsidy from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan for the government-commissioned research to produce Rice Kefiran. It is unique in the way that we first used rice to produce the lactobacillus fermenting substance (100% vegetable origin). Also, we were the first to culture L. kefiranofaciens singly. We added anecdotes about the development and concluded that Rice Kefiran is a prebiotic and biogenic functional food ingredient.

Rice Kefiran, with its unique character and novelty, drew a lot of attention from the audience. Among the 3 functional food ingredients exhibited at our booth, Rice Kefiran was again the center of attention.
